V. Old

The missus and I spent Saturday at the V FESTIVAL in Sydney, a corp rock fest hosted by Virgin (Mobile Phones, Airlines, Music, Self help books). It had been a while since we had ventured out to a festival but couldn't resist the chance to see the Pixies, New York Dolls (pictured) Pet Shop Boys etc. The name V was apt as the experience reminded us of that 80's T.V show of the same name. Indeed, we felt like aliens had taken over in the form of obnoxious 16-25 year olds. Gen Y as they are termed. Thousands of youth strutted around texting whilst wearing fluro T-shirts, Ksubi jeans, and Rayban Wayfarers. The missus and I were left questioning the youth of today and doing a little compare and contrast with our memories of 10 years ago.

The music was great, amazing sound. The New York Dolls killed speculation that they are a retro novelty act, Phoenix were awesome and the Pixies sublime! What was interesting was how much of the music was either older bands or very retro in feel (Gnarles Barkley) Indeed, it felt like the youth of today had hi-jacked all that was good about the past, mixed it up with fashion that mocked our childhood and somewhere along the line missed the point(presumably whilst they were texting someone).

I guess that's what getting old is about...
