Cross roads and spirit boundries.

A controversy has been brewing in Sydney's Bondi. The area, which features an odd mix of backpackers, professional party people and Orthodox Jewry, is debating whether or not to install motion sensor lights so that Orthodox Jewish people can cross roads safely on the Sabbath and not contradict halacha law by pushing the cross button. The Jewish community, are themselves, debating whether or not activating a motion sensor is just as bad as pushing a button. meanwhile the Anti-Semites are up in arms. "My taxes going to this etc etc."

This kind of controversy is not new. A similar storm in a tea cup raged with the local council granting permission to build a "Spirit Wall" or Eruv around this area. The wall, made up of existing walls, power lines etc is an invisible boundary in which Orthodox Jews are allowed to practise activities on the Sabbath that they normally wouldn't be able to do.An Eruv is simply a practical method of denoting the area within which carrying objects and pushing strollers & wheelchairs is permitted on Shabbat.

Interestingly the White House is enclosed in a D.C Eruv. More ammo for the conspiracists/racists.

One group that is sure to love auto crossing lights is Bondi's oft forgotten OCD population, rejoicing that they don't have to touch another germ infested cross walk button.
